Spirit of timidity

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline (2.Tim 1:7 NIV).

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Eph 6:12).

This tells us that our struggle is against an invisible enemy, rather than against flesh and blood that we can see with our human eyes. The spiritual forces attack us in attempt to draw our attention away from the cross. Jesus has defeated the devil, and won the victory once and for all. However, in order to live in his victory, we need to submit ourselves to Jesus. If we loose focus on Him, we might easily be overwhelmed by our difficult circumstances, which leaves us defeated. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart (Heb 12:3).

One of the spiritual forces that try to prevent us from living in Jesus ‘victory is the spirit of timidity. Its aim is to make us timid and fearful, so that we do not put our faith in Jesus.

Putting our faith in Christ is trusting that He will do to us according to his word. People living in faith are the devils most dangerous opponents. For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God (1.John5:4-5).

The spirit of timidity attacks many Christians in order to destroy their foundation in Christ. Timidity is translated from the Greek word deilias. Deilias means timidity, fearfulness, shyness, cowardice, to be chickenhearted, to be a wretch, to grovel, to toady, to flatter and to bow.

Whenever these things trouble us we need to know that they are not by our God! God did not give us a spirit of timidity. He who puts his trust in Christ will receive the spirit God gave us: the one of power, love and self-discipline.

This spirit is the opposite of timidity. In the Greek version they use the word sōphronismou for self-discipline, which means disciplined, self-controlled, balanced, still, clear, calm, mild, peace. This is what should characterize those who put their trust in God.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you (James 4:7).

Jesus is way greater than your circumstances, trials and difficulties. Put your trust in his promises, the ones He died for so that you could partake in!

Though you don’t see the solution to your struggles, choose to trust in the Lord, and He will deliver you. Do not allow negative thought to control you, but have faith in that Jesus has nothing but plans to prosper you. He will give you hope and a future (Jer 29:11).

Your faith will determine whether you live victorious or defeated. Therefore, cast all your worries on Him, reject the spirit of timidity, and experience that God will make a way where there seems to be no way.

God bless you!
